AV Student Council - $20 Backpack for the Homeless - Don't forget to sign up with a Student Council team to donate items for the $20 Backpack for the Homeless fundraiser! With your help, we will be supplying backpacks with necessities to aid homeless people in our community. Ask your friends to join you on a team; a group prize will be awarded to the team with all the items collected first! Anyone interested in taking part in next years’ student council, you are invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday April 16 at noon (12:25) in room 204. The structure of next years student council will be a bit different and anyone in either grade 10 or 11 who is interested in Student Council should attend the meeting. Youth Sport Fair
Summer sport opportunities for youth information fair will be held on April 26, 2014 from 9:00 am- 12:00 noon at the Hants County War Memorial in Windsor. One male and one female is selected from grade 11. Selected award recipients will have exceptional leadership qualities in both the school and community and commendable academic performance in the courses in which they are enrolled.

Opportunity for AV Young Women
Beginning on Wednesday February 19th, our student services counsellors, Mrs. Coldwell and Ms. Fraser, will be starting a group for the young women of AVHS. This group will run for 1 hour every Wednesday for approximately three months from 11:45-1:00.
Mrs. Coldwell and Ms. Fraser are seeking young women to be part of this group who would like to connect and to help other young women and be part of this group as a means for their own personal growth. There are a limited number of seats available. Further information regarding meeting topics and application forms are available at the Student Services Office. I am going to postpone the Avon View Archery Club on Wednesday's until the Spring. We have missed the last two sessions due to poor weather. The gym is going to a very busy place in February and March and we will be bumped for other activities. I plan to start the Avon View Archery club back up in April and May. Please feel free to drop by my room 208 to talk to Mr. Wile, if you have any questions.

Congratulations goes out to the boys basketball team for a hard battle between the home team Yarmouth losing by just one point placing them 2nd in the Yarmouth tournament this past weekend. Great job guys!
Be sure to come out on Wednesday night to cheer the boys on in their game against Middleton at 7:30.

Dr. P. Anthony Johnstone Memorial Entrance Scholarship This entrance scholarship was established by the Province of Nova Scotia in 1991 to encourage young people to educate themselves on human rights issues in Canada. This is a non-renewable entrance scholarship of $6,000 and applies to the first year of study only. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must live in Nova Scotia, be graduating from high school and beginning an undergraduate degree program at a Maritime university in the fall. The applicant must also have demonstrated an interest in multiculturalism and human rights. Application forms are available from Student Services of
www.gov.ns.ca/lae/scholarships. Application deadline is March 31, 2014.
Grade 12 students may apply for the Burger King Scholars Program. These scholarship awards are open to all North American high school seniors as well as Burger King employees, their dependent children, spouses or domestic partners and may receive up to $50,000. The AV student council is starting a food drive for our local food bank. Help those in need this holiday season by making a donation of a food item. Donations can be made in the lobby or in Mrs. Chances’ room. Your donation can make a difference!
This week student council is holding a Winter Carnival with different clothing themes for every day of the week. Thursday is Ugly Christmas Sweater day, and Friday will be pyjama day. Everyone get in the holiday spirit and wear your Christmas clothing! There will also be a Christmas movie playing in the cafeteria this week at lunch along with a Christmas themed lunchtime activity.
Ballots will be given to any students who return overdue books to the Library before Christmas Break. One ballot for each book returned will go in for the draw on December 19th. There will be two draws, one for a female student, and one for a male student. Good Luck and bring my children home.
Tickets for tonights dance will be on sale in the lobby at recess and noon and can be purchased after lunch in room 204. In order to be admitted to tonights dance you must have purchased a ticket at school today or have seen Ms Chance in room 204 to make other arrangements. AS always, no tickets will be sold at the door. You will not be permitted to get in to tonights dance without your school ID. Please do not show up at the door with an excuse just bring your ID or make arrangements at school today if you do not have one. Its going to be a great time. See you there.
The AVHS Leadership group will be selling candy grams at recess and noon beginning on Monday, December 16th. These will be sold in the lobby Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and delivered during 4th period on Thursday, December 19th. We will have $1 and $2 bags available. Please help support the AVHS Leadership raise funds to support a family this Christmas by sending your special someone a Christmas treat!

JV Girls Basketball
Tuesday night the JV girls basketball played two strong games at Hants North Rural High School, in the first game defeating CEC's JV team 58-38 and coming up short to the Home
Team, Hants North with a final score of 73-53. Avon View's JV girls play Parkview JV today at home at 4:00 pm- come out and cheer on your AV Avalanche.
AV WE Act
Today will be the last day contribute to AV's giving/kindness tree. So far lots of students and staff have showed their support of our local and global initiatives, and don't forget to come and make a donation on behalf of someone special and receive a gift certificate. A big thank you to everyone for your support of our initiative. Yeti hats and Rafiki bracelets are still available and will continue to be sold in the new year.
Any grade 11 student wishing to be considered for an all expense-paid Leadership Camp in Mexico from Friday, Feb. 28 to Saturday, March 15, please fill out an application at Student Services. Only 3 students will be selected to go from Annapolis Valley Regional School Board. Selection will be based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activity, school leadership activities, community leadership activities, and a student essay. Deadline is today at 9 a.m. sharp in Student Services.

Students are reminded that Rotary Applications to participate in next year's exchange program are due in Student Services by 3:30 today
Any students wishing to review or change courses for next semester are required to do so before Monday, December 2nd. You can do this by making an appointment to see your school counselor in the student services office. If you do not know what courses you are currently registered in, again, please make an appointment to see your counselor.
Please note: There are very few seats available in courses for the 2nd semester so students will be very limited in changing courses. Students are also reminded that they are not permitted to repeat courses next semester which they are not achieving success in this semester- this is due to the fact that classes are very, very full.
Information on the Veronica Connolly Prize for Excellence in West Hants Historical Research contest may be obtained at Student Services. Prize for grades 10, 11 and 12 is $100.00 and the deadline for entries is January 31, 2014.
Lieutenant Governor's Respectful Citizenship Award
The new Lieutenant Governor's Respectful Citizenship Award will recognize students from around the province who are going the extra mile to demonstrate leadership and commitment to creating safe and inclusive spaces in school and /or communities in Nova Scotia where bullying behaviour is not accepted and respectful and responsible relationships are promoted. Students/teams must be nominated by someone other than himself/herself and must provide two additional references in order to be considered for this award. Nomination and Reference forms are at Student Services. As well, information and forms can also be found at ww.antibullying.novascotia.ca . The deadline for nominations is December 20, 2013. The Lieutenant Governor will present awards on
February 26, 2014 in recognition of National Anti-Bullying Day.

Camp Connect Association is a new not for profit group, which works to bring together grade 7 kids from all across West Hants in a 2 day camp each September. The purpose; to have the teens get together with their peers in a secure, non threatening environment to gain insight and empathy and get to know one another. The original idea for a camp such as this was born from a parents wish to try and stop Middle School bullying, where those kids who for one reason or another are bullies .....or are bullied, could get together and hopefully develop a connection with each other.
As a new group, we wanted to develop a logo that might become as recognizable to children and the general public as Pepsi or Lu Lu Lemon!
The winner of this contest will win a $100 gift card of their choice. There will also be three random draws for other prizes.
There are posters up around the school, please see them for contest rules and deadlines.
The parent/teacher meeting will take place on Thursday, November 7th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Friday, November 8th from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. The forms where given out to students on Friday, October 18th and should be returned to the office by Thursday, October 31st. The forms will be filled out by the office and returned by Wednesday, November 6th. Any student that was not in school on October 18th can pick up a p/t form at the office.

Halloween Dance tickets will be being sold in the lobby at lunch. Tickets will be sold for $8 dollars, $7 if you bring a non-perishable food item, student ID will be required to buy tickets. Bring your costumes to the dance as there will be prizes given out to the best costume, the best duo and the most creative costume!
Graduating students who are enrolling in science, technology, engineering or mathematics programs in university and who would like to be considered for nomination for the Schulich Leader scholarships please pick up a nomination sheet from Ms. Church in Student Services. Twenty pre-selected universities from across Canada will each choose one outstanding student from the list of nominees to be their Schulich Leader, each of whom will receive a four-year scholarship valued at $60,000 to support their studies at that university. The Youth Health Centre
The Centre is hosting a photo booth on Thursday at lunch hour to celebrate Halloween. If you are dressed up or wish you were, come to the health centre and get a spooky photo taken. We have lots of accessories for you to borrow. Staff and students welcome.
